About the project

We were invited by Toro Shelters, working for Morgan Sindall, to tender for the complete works package for the design and construction of the foundations, concrete base and precast retaining walls for a new salt barn in Houghton Regis.

The new infrastructure project for Central Bedfordshire Council included a 5000T salt storage facility. The preliminary design was for a traditional steel framed structure, with internal retaining walls to contain the grit salt. However, Morgan Sindall was keen to explore the potential of a more cost effective method of construction for this project.

Modular Cubed, teamed up with structural engineers – JPG, Toro Shelters and JP Concrete to put together a proposal for an alternative structure. The design would include using a lightweight latticed galvanised steel structure covered with a tensioned composite membrane, supplied by Toro Shelters and precast retaining walls from JP Concrete Products and a fiber reinforced concrete floor slab.

The key criteria for winning this project was the ability to save costs, while optimising design for bulk storing highly corrosive material. This is where Toro and our engineers were able to provide some real value.

The project was delivered on time and within budget to the delight of the client and main contractor Morgan Sindall.

As with all our projects, we take great pride in offering a professional and safe working environment. Our commitment to site safety was recognised by Morgan Sindall who awarded Modular Cubed & Toro Shelters their health & safety award for December 2016.

The project images below show the construction phases of the project from the formation of the ringbeam, through to final project sign off.

Toro Shelters awarded Modular Cubed the contract to design and build the foundations, base slab and retaining wall structure for the Bedfordshire salt barn. The design solution was clearly well thought out, Tony and his team worked tirelessly to deliver a seamless and extremely high quality installation. There is clearly an ethos of helpfulness and professionalism that runs through the company and this is the reason that we will be asking them to quote for our future projects.
